3 Things I Wish Someone Told Me In My 20’s

Living in your 20’s is a strange decade in your life. You might start it off at college, at a job, or still deciding what to do in your life. There’s a whole load of uncertainty ahead and most of us would say this decade is one of the most defining periods of your life.

It’s also one of the most fun times of your life. Most of you will be getting your first taste of real independence, away from the bank of mom and dad. You’re going to have to cook your own meals, wash your own laundry and *shock horror* pay your own bills!

These are the top 3 things that would’ve made my 20’s a lot smoother.

1. Find Yourself A Mentor.

A mentor is one of the most underrated roles. A good mentor can help open the right doors, help you meet the right people and possibly most importantly, help you decide what you want to do.

2. Ideas Are Worth Nothing.

Most budding entrepreneurs I’ve met hold onto an idea they’ve had without ever wanting to share it in the fear that someone’s going to steal it. Heck, I’ve been presented with 10+ page NDA (that’s Non-Disclosure Agreement for you non-lawyer types) before I’m even allowed to see the project title.

Well, here’s a news flash. Whatever your great and grand idea is – someone’s already thought of it. Yup, that brilliant idea of opening a hole-in-a-wall coffee shop? Or a niche dating website for cat lovers? It’s been thought of.

But that’s not to say your idea is useless. What I’m trying to say is ACTION is what counts here. Ideas aren’t worth anything until they’re acted on. So if what’s stopping you from acting on your idea is because you’re afraid someone will steal it, don’t be. Share it around wisely and you never know who might be able to help you.

3. It’s Not About You.

Wait, come again? What do you mean it’s not about me? The quicker you realize that the world doesn’t revolve around you (and I mean this nicely), the quicker you’ll be able to put your problems into perspective and find your true calling.

Take a trip out to a developing country, get involved in a charity, donate time to a shelter – it’s a cliche I know but the more you give, the more you receive.

So these are my top 3 tips for living in my 20’s that I wish I knew earlier. What about you? Do you agree with me or have I missed something important?
