Nicole was running late to drop her son Hunter off at school because of car trouble. She knew Hunter was upset about being late because he would get a detention during lunchtime. But she thought Hunter was a bit “too” upset about detention and she smelled something fishy so she decided to go check up on him during lunch. This is what she saw:
Nicole was shocked to find him sitting all alone and crying, with a cardboard partition right in front of his face, preventing him from seeing or making contact with other students. As if that wasn’t bad enough, there was also a cup with a “D” written on it, which stood for detention. He was crying and humiliated.
She was outraged that her first-grade son was publicly humiliated like this in front of his classmates.
Nicole quickly snapped a photo and took Hunter home for the day.
Nicole’s photo went viral on Facebook. It caught the attention of radio personality Bill Meyer.
“We see a lot of bad news, or we have a lot of problems. So seldomly do we ever get a chance to fix the root of the problem,” Meyer said. “I saw the school policy as being unjust, but I saw the root of the trouble was car trouble.”
Meyer contacted Lisa McClease-Kelly, owner of Kelly’s Automotive, to see if she could fix the family’s Dodge Durango. However, the repairs were worth more than the car itself. That’s when Rapid Repo and Collections stepped in and donated a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country van.
Nicole and her family were absolutely stunned.
Other local businesses helped, too, and soon the van was complete with a new windshield and tires.
And remember the owner of Kelly’s Automotive? She gifted the family with $1,400 of maintenance and free oil changes for a whole year.
“This family never asked for the help. All they ever wanted was to change the school policy,” Meyer said.
“We saw a way to do a little nudge, and then everyone else came in with their time and generosity.”
What do you think of Hunter’s punishment? I’m just glad this story ends with such a positive twist.
